The Book Nook

A few days ago I posted about Montessori. I finished my first project, Isabella now has a little reading nook right in the living room. We don't have a bookcase yet, so for now her books are just in the basket.

It didn't cost anything to do this! I made my own pattern for the bean bag chair, then sewed it from some curtains that I didn't need. I stuffed it with packing peanuts that I got free from the post office. And this is the picture I framed for her, which I just printed off and put in one of the 12,000 frames we got as wedding gifts.

Is there a way you can post your pattern for your chair? That is too cute!!

Wow, I'm impressed! I need to do that for Madeleine.

Connie,

This is going to sound really weird, but this is what I did -

I knew I wanted the chair to be round, so I took an orange and cut it into 4 equal sections. Then I looked very closely at the peel of one of the sections. While looking at how the peel was shaped, I drew out a huge version (you can make it whatever size, I just did what I thought looked okay) of it to make a pattern, and did some measuring to make sure I had the center correct, etc. Then cut out four equal pieces, sewed them together leaving a small hole to stuff it, turned it right side out, stuffed it, and hand sewed the hole shut. I hope that made sense! It's very easy once you get the pattern figured out. The pattern took me a little while, but I did the sewing in one nap time! Good luck, I bet Benjamin would love one.

I love this! I thought I'd be all Montessori-ish today and hung up a few things for Isaac near his play kitchen, low enough for him to "enjoy" them. Well, I have an interior designer on my hands (when we're rearranging furniture, he walks around muttering to himself, "I think this would look good here," I think we should put the basket here"). No sooner had I hung them up and he was rearranging them, switching them, getting his hammer to pound in the nails more, and then he wanted to get something from his room to hang up instead. Sheesh!

New reader here - love your book nook! Where did you print the painting from? I'd love to do something similar...

Hi, thanks for your comment! I feel bad, but I don't know where I printed that from. I just searched google with something like, "painting of little girl reading"

I dropped over from Mommy Life and love your little book spot :). I've just given my nine month old his own shelf in our living room, and I'd love to also make him a bean bag. You are very clever to create your own pattern! Thankfully my mother-in-law has given me a pattern so I may be able to make that. God bless as you seek to create a wonderful learning environment for in your home!
