My Poor Baby!!

I know I've mentioned it before on here, and also in my last post, about Isabella's major struggle with constipation. As of today it has been 10 days since she has "gone". I've given her two enemas in the last two days, and they didn't work! I can't believe it. Besides, the poor girl is traumatized, and I mean completely. traumatized. from having them. I absolutely cannot give her any more enemas, both physically and emotionally! Watching her sit on the potty and try to go brings me to tears every time, the only way to describe it is like watching someone in labor, seriously! We took her into to the pediatrician this morning, and he did something he hasn't done in the past when I have taken her in for this problem. He ordered that X-Rays be done to see what was going on inside. Thank goodness Monte came along because I couldn't be in the room with her while she was getting the X-Rays, because of being pregnant. Instead, I sat out in the waiting room and listened to her terrified screams of "Daddy, hold me!!!!" I told her they were just going to take pictures of her tummy, but when they told her she had to have her clothes off, she thought they were going to give her another enema, and she FREAKED OUT! She also told me later that she thought the X-Ray was going to fall on her, since she was laying on the table with it right above her. :( It's hard to imagine what was going on in that little 3 year old mind of hers. Anyway . . . I'm so glad we got the X-Rays done because they showed that she has 4 major blockages in her, and they are huge. One is down low where you would expect it, but the other 3 are way up high in her digestive tract, which is a little unusual. Who knows how long they have been there, possibly a very long time, which is why we can never seem to get ahead of the problem. The doctor said we need to give her half a bottle of magnesium citrate today and tomorrow, and that should clean her out. We also need to give Mira.lax for the next couple of weeks, and then gradually taper off. He said magnesium citrate is usually his last resort in little kids because it tastes so awful, and it's hard to get them to take it when they are as little as she is, but it really works well I guess. He also said he sees cases as bad as hers at least once a day in his office! That surprises me how common it is! She didn't put up too much of a fuss about drinking all of the magnesium citrate, but it did take her about 2 hours to sit there and drink it, and A LOT of coaxing from us, including bribes of playing Candyland and getting to watch TV when she was done!! The Dr. wants to see her back for more X-Rays in 2 weeks to make sure the blockages are gone. Hopefully we can get this taken care of, then maybe her high fiber diet we give her will start kicking in on it's own.

Oh, no! Hopefully this will get her straightened out, the poor thing. I'm glad you found the blockages, though - yikes!!

I'm so glad that you got to look at what's going on inside of her! The poor dear (and her loving parents - how heart wrenching!). I will pray for her tonight as I fall asleep.

Oh my gosh, that is horrible. I'm glad you had the intuition to take her when you realized the enemas just weren't cutting it. That is crazy. I know you told me once she wasn't crazy about water and I would normally NEVER recommend this but sugar free Kool Aid is pretty tasty:) I used to gulp that stuff up. Would a fancy mini water cooler entice her b/c Miss Brenda would send one to her asap!

Hi Angela,

I found your blog through Faithful Homemaking (Lindsey) and after reading your post on Isabella's constipation, I knew I had to get in touch with you. My son Bryce is 4 and has struggled with constipation since birth. It doesn't matter how much fiber, water, etc. we give him, it just never got better. We had even ended up in the ER a few times and the "solution" was always Miralax. The problem was that every time he got better, we would stop the miralax and then the problem would come back. There was a fabulous article in a recent Parents or Parenting magazine about constipation. I was written by a doctor and talks about his son's struggles. The article made so much sense. I'll try and find it and post a link in the comment section since I don't have your email.

One thing we found recently that has changed our lives is Pedi-lax gummies. They are chewable gummies (we call them Magic Gummies) and my son eats 3 of them each day. He prefers to eat all three with breakfast, but I'm sure you could split them up throughout the day. The nice thing is there is no mixing of water, juice etc.

Another problem we ran into with Miralax was that I would mix it with juice/water, etc but then my son may not finish the whole cup so he wasn't getting the entire dose.

I'm sorry this is so long, but when I read your post I thought . . . this is me a year ago and I wish someone would have helped me out:)

BTW, the pedia-lax gummies are in the enema, pepto, milk of magnesia section, not the vitamin section!

Good luck,

Angela,

The article I mentioned in my previous comment is from the April 2010 issue of Parents magazine. However, I have searched their website high and low and cannot find it posted anywhere. If you don't receive that magazine, maybe your local library will have a copy.

The link below (from the Parent's website) mentions the article, but doesn't provide a link to it - frustrating, I know:)

http://www.parents.com/blogs/goodyblog/tag/constipation/

Without going into too much detail, the doctor (of two young sons) says that frequent or unsolved constipation stretches the intestines to a point that it takes weeks, even months, for them to shrink back to normal. This is why many children will have several bouts of constipation in a row because once they "go", we as parents think the problem is solved, but it's not.

I hope this information is helpful and I hope you don't think I'm a crazy stranger from Ohio:) I just feel for you and your daughter.

If you want to post my comments, great; if not, I understand. They are a little detailed and long:)

Have a great day,
Beth Evans from Ohio
